Here I am, visiting the forum on Christmas Eve! Am I a dork or what? :P

Merry Christmas!
Happy Hannukah!
Joyous Kwanza!

(Why does Kwanza get stuck with "joyous?" I wonder.)

And for those of you wishing to be politically correct, happy holidays and wondeful winterfest! :P

:D

Merry Christmas!

To our international friends and my fellow wet coast friends!

PS. The weather sucks here. Cold, wet and foggy, what Christmas weather eh?

And the weather truely is bad. I was hoping for a white Christmas!

And I'm here on Boxing Day, which means nothing in France, the USA or Canada (as far as I know).

Well, Boxing Day is no a stat holiday, but it is widely celebrated and is also theday for large sales at almost all retail outlets. I tried the malls last year--wouldn't want to again. Frenzy!

Wishing everyone, at this point, a happy New Year! (in a couple of days)

Mr. Jones, this may sound like a very stupid question, but I will ask it anyways :-D

What is Boxing Day? Why Do we celebrate it? I have heard various differnent explanations, but really, what is the point of it? Just another day around the last few weeks of december to name. Hmm, I wonder what named day will come next...

:P

Boxing Day originated in England in Victorian times.
It is likely that most servants would be required to work on Christmas Day. But as they prepared to leave to visit their families on 26th, their employers would present them with their "Christmas box," normally a cash gift.
I believe it is celebrated in most former British colonies - e.g. Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc.

Personally I mark the day by consuming a "box" of alka seltzer

This makes sense, and I understand that people may still want to remeber this day, or celebrate it today. But why 'Boxing' day? As far as I know, the only meaning of 'boxing' is a sport in which someone with gloves on tries to knock out someone else with glvoes on. The giving of boxes to someone can be known as boxing too? Or perhaps it is just old english. Or perhaps an illiterate servant wrote it down on the calender and it got passed on from there. Who knows!
