Feminists have suggested that the 'personal is political'. What do they mean by this and do you agree with them?

“Is the Person Political?” means to do with personal things related to family and relationships. It also says that it is a way in which the male society can dominate women.
In our view we feel that some of this is a load of rubbish. Now a day’s men and women have equal roles in the family for example the housework and child care can be shared between both parents not just by women due to the fact of conjugal roles. Men and women now both go out to work in society so that they are both equally the breadwinner. In some cases men are said to be a house husband meaning that he stays at home looking after the children while his wife or partner goes out to work.

The term 'is the personal political?' means is the family what happen in the family e.g. men ruling over women, to do with what happens in poltics. radical feminists are the type of feminist who base there theory you most around 'is the personal political?'. i don't believe this is true because now men and women share congigual roles between themselves. also women are becoming more likely to be the main breadwinners with men taking on the role of househusband.

'The personal is political' is closely linked to patriarchy. It is argued that patriarchy is established and reinforced in family relationships. Stating that the male dominate women can depend on the whole situation. It has been proved now-a-days that women are becoming a lot more independent. Many people have stated that 'the future is female'. Feminists have argued that 'the personal is political' and these are the sociologists that look at how women benefit and mostly are exploiated by men.
I think that women can be dominated by men if they are put into a specific situation, but I do think that this is not right. I think that women are just as good as men and they have already started to prove this. ;)

Is 'the personal political'? This statement basically means the relationships between family members are reinforced by patriarchy; patriarchy being a male dominated society.

Do we agree with this? Well, yes and no. In some cases men do rule the roost. They go to work, earn a living while their wives look after the home and bring up the children. In other cases, both parents work and the children are looked after by a child minder. Finally, but very rarely, the wife will go to work, earn a living while the husband looks after the home and brings up the children. This last one may be rare but is becoming more acceptable in society.

So, we do believe that there is some patriarchy especially in the home but it could be changing to become more equalised within both society and the home. When the family realises that men and women DON'T have specific jobs, patriarchy will have disipated from the home. This in turn would have an effect on society and the way in which it works.

Feminism has certainly altered peoples perspective on what is "political" and what isn't. The basic position is that in a patriarchical society (one in which men exploit and rule over women) the source of this domination is in people's private lives and relationships.
Focussing attention therefore on what used to be regarded as "political" - Parliament, laws, campaigns etc. won't solve the essential problem of men dominating women.
Can any of you workshy ( ) bunch think of an example of a radical feminist who has suggested a way of tackling patriarchy within personal relationships??????????

“Personal is Political”...........

Means when the reinforcement and the establishment in the family relationships are personal and political.

We therefor don’t agree :o with this theory as men and women these days have equal right i.e. jobs, housework, children and cooking.

However few years ago this theory would have been right as men did benefit in our everyday lives and dominated women.

But time and generation has changed therefor we don’t agree with this theory of Patriarchy. :P

From looking at the stastics, it has shown that the personal political is still around even now but not as bad.

Men still dominate the society but not as the whole society, time has change and the independant of women has grown. Even through this has change women are still seen as the weaker sex.

Hopefully over time, men and women will have equal rights and both have a fair chance of getting top jobs.

"Personal is political" means the view of men having more power over women in society.

We disagree with this because we believe that men and women have an equal social status in society, as women have become more independent and laws have been introduced.

Although this was the case many years ago!!

The personal is political statement linked with patriachy is put forward by radical feminists that suggest our society is dominated by men which has been reinforced in family relationships. And that women are exploited in our society and that male domination orginated in biological differance.
We both agree that the personal political still exists as if you look and stattistics for the top jobs it is clear that men hold a large majority of them even though these figures are decreasing we agree that it still exists.

I believe the statement "personel is personel" is true. I dont think that it is as bad as it has been as it is slowly changing through time. It is mainly due to patriachy. Men seem to dominate society, not as much as they use to, because it is slowly changin. Men still get the top jobs and men that have the top jobs are more likely to employ men to work for them. This is because women are seen as wives and mothers still.
Men see that women are there for the biological side of life. They give birth to the children and the men will provide money for them to live on.     :( :) <_< -_-

Looking at the statistics, from a number of years ago, it shows that men still dominated top jobs, which is a disgrace

Although the jobs shown in the table are all full time and time consuming -_- The reason why the majority are men maybe because women may want to focus on having a family  therefore they may prefer to have a part time job. Women do have the opportunity to go for these jobs but maybe it may not be what they want to do.

Good points
Don't forget also that girls career expectations may be limited by being socialised into a socially constructed idea of what is "feminine". The family therefore as the vehicle for this primary socialisation can also be seen as "political"
